“A girl should be two things, who and what she wants to be”. In this 21st century, women empowerment has become the talk of the day. The reign of the male dominated society had declined with the rise of women empowerment. In the earlier times, women were considered and treated as mere objects. Not only they were they subjugated, tortured, abused, harassed physically but also mentally. They were given an inferior position in the family. Women were limited to only the four boundaries of the home. They were not allowed to take any decisions of their own nor of their families. To pen in better words they were treated as slaves. The subjugation and harassment still continues until today, but as compared to the previous times, the increase in violence of women has considerably decreased due to the concept of women empowerment and also due to our great fighters and reformers like Raja Rammohan Roy and Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar who abolished the practice of child marriage and sati which were one of the most evil practices of those times.
Women empowerment refers to the concept where women consider themselves to be independent, they make their own choices which will benefit themselves as well as the society on the whole. Women should be given social, political, economic and legal rights as well they should strengthen themselves in these fields and aspects to ensure their betterment in the society. Women empowerment enables women to live their lives with dignity, self respect and self worth. It ensures them to participate in socio economic and political activities and also enables them to get equal opportunities, irrespective of gender bias.
The concept of women empowerment occupies a pivotal and crucial part because women constitute 50% of the total population of the world. If women are uneducated and unemployed, then the economic growth suffers. Earlier women were restricted to pursue higher education and studies. But since times have changed, women are equally competent to men, and are ahead of men in all activities. The empowerment of women not only helps her to enhance her skills and talents individually, but also contributes to the overall development of the society. Educated women are aware of their rights so it prevents themselves from being corrupted and harassed. It reduces poverty as employed women can bring more money to the family.
Women should be allowed to live their lives in their own ways because they have same aspirations, wishes, talents as men have. A women is now an important instrument of social change. Therefore, evil practices like female infanticide, female foeticide, physically abusing women, trafficking etc should be stopped. To put an end to all these criminal activities the government has taken an initiative for spreading awareness and has also developed several women empowerment schemes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Ujjwala scheme, etc. Many NGOs have also contributed to the welfare of women.
Therefore, women constitute an important element in our society hence women empowerment should be encouraged to secure a women's socioeconomic position as well as for their overall betterment and development in the country.
